It’s hot out with peak summer temps and air conditioners everywhere are running to the max. We often think of our air and heating systems (HVAC) as just regulating temperatures inside, but really they are the “lungs of your home.” Your home’s system takes air in and breathes it out and is the precursor for indoor air quality.

The top two reasons for cleaning and servicing your air ducts are indoor air quality and efficiency.

Indoor air quality and health

Indoor air quality is one of the most important aspects of living in your home as is closely relates to your respiratory health. Through normal occupation in a home, we generate a great deal of contaminants and air pollutants, such as dander, pet hair, dust, and chemicals. It is estimated that in a typical six-room home, up to 40 pounds of dust is created annually through everyday living. These contaminants are pulled into the HVAC system and re-circulated 5 to 7 times per day, on average. Over time, this re-circulation causes a build-up of contaminants in the duct work.

Energy savings

According to the U.S. Department of Energy, 25% to 40% of the energy used for heating and cooling a home is wasted. (Information gathered from the NADCA). Contaminants in the heating and cooling system cause it to work harder and shorten the life of your system. Although filters are used, the heating and cooling system still gets dirty through normal use. When an HVAC system is clean, it doesn’t have to work as hard to maintain the temperature you desire. As a result, less energy is used, lending to improved effectiveness.

Below are maintenance tips recommended by the EPA.

  • Use the highest efficiency air filter recommended by the manufacturer for your heating and cooling system.
  • Change filters regularly.
  • Be sure you do not have any missing filters or gaps around the filter holder through which air can bypass the filter.
  • Remove dust and vacuum your home regularly. Use a high efficiency vacuum cleaner with HEPA filters

Dear EarthTalk: My carpets need professional cleaning, but I don’t want chemicals and fumes in my house. Some companies advertise “safe,” but I’m not sure.

Traditional commercial carpet-cleaning solutions contain a cocktail of noxious synthetic chemicals. One, perchloroethylene, commonly called “perc” in the industry, is a notorious dry cleaning additive known to cause dizziness, fatigue and nausea if ingested or inhaled. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) also links perc to kidney and liver damage. Another chemical, naphthalene, a solvent manufactured from coal tar, is considered toxic to the human central nervous system and a possible carcinogen by the U.S. Environmental Read more >>

New carpet can improve the appearance of any room, but how can carpet that is walked on every day continue looking new? To keep your carpet clean, it’s necessary to vacuum regularly with a strong, well-functioning and properly-filtered vacuum cleaner. Unfortunately, due to traffic, children, pets and normal wear, carpet fibers inevitably become soiled, and a dull appearance results. And no matter how much you vacuum, eventually you will need to call a professional carpet cleaner.

Regular professional cleaning using a Certified Firm is as important to your carpet as having a trained mechanic perform routine tune-ups on your car. While your carpet may appear clean on the surface, periodic cleaning by a certified technician can remove what you can’t see and help your carpet retain its fresh, beautiful appearance.
